Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve

Since 1979 Sabi Sabi has hosted visitors from all over the world, drawn to this unique area by the promise of the safari experience of a lifetime. Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve, situated in the world-renowned 65000 hectare Sabi Sand Wildtuin in the South-Western section of the Kruger National Park, is a wildlife oasis, where you can observe at close quarters the age-old natural relationship between predator and prey.

Big game abounds and roams freely throughout this pristine part of the ancient African continent. The diverse habitat is home to spectacular wildlife including the Big 5 – lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo and elephant – as well as cheetah, wild dog and some 200 other animal species indigenous to the area.

There is nothing quite as stirring as the sight of a lion, elephant or rhino roaming free in the bush; as haunting as the sound of a hyaena laughing in the dead of night; as electrifying as the tension one feels when following spoor along a dry riverbed. This is what makes the Sabi Sabi experience so memorable. Day and night in open Land Rovers, led by highly trained Game Rangers and qualified Trackers, follow the animals on and off-road, deep into the heart of the wild African Bushveld. Walking safaris allow guests to feel the pulse of untamed Africa through the soles of their feet.

The Bushcamp Company

The Bushcamp Company was formed in 1999 when four camps – the well-established Kuyenda and Chamilandu, and the younger Chindeni and Bilimungwe – came together under one parent company. Our fifth bushcamp, Kapamba, was built on the banks of the Kapamba River in 2005, and in 2008 a sixth camp, Zungulila, was built upstream on the same river. Founded by Andy Hogg and Andrea Bizzaro, the company is still run from its headquarters at Mfuwe Lodge by Andy – a Zambian who used to work at Save the Rhino Trust’s Chinzombo Lodge in Luangwa.

The Bushcamp Company is fortunate enough to be the only safari operator in this southern section of the park. As a result, we pride ourselves on the intimate nature of our small, exclusive bushcamps, each one situated in breathtaking and remote locations, far from other camps and tourists.

Fairlawns Boutique Hotel & Spa

Before Fairlawns became a boutique hotel in 1997, it was originally a ten-acre family home, owned by the Brenthurst Trust of Oppenheimer fame, sporting stables, a training rink, a cow (just one), geese, dogs, and two teenage children.  In 1994 the eastern section bounding on Bowling Ave was sold to developers and the residential estate known as Camelot was built on the site.  An offer from developers for the western section took a bit more soul-searching before being sold as it meant loosing not only an historical cottage, but the lunge rink and grazing, which in effect meant parting with the horses. It was only once the family was left with the remaining three acres and the original homestead that Mr. Thacker decided to realize his dream of having a ‘country hotel’ – albeit in the heart of Sandton, the new CBD of Johannesburg.

The original accommodation block comprised 12 suites, each uniquely decorated. Apart from the African Suite, they are mostly euro-centric in their decorating with high ceilings, elaborate cornicing, tall doors and sumptuous fabrics.
